This solar flood light has two parts: a lamp with its own battery, and a small panel on a 5 m cable. Fix the panel in the sun, fix the lamp where you need the light, and it runs without mains wiring. It suits small areas where trenching a cable would cost more than the light.

Sizes: real panel and battery data

Sellers of solar flood lights usually quote a large wattage on the label. The table shows the same products by the numbers that decide performance. Stored energy is the battery’s voltage × capacity; daily energy assumes 4.5 peak sun hours and a PWM controller, using the same method as our solar street light calculator.

Market label Panel Battery Stored energy Energy per sunny day Real average power over 10 hours
25 W 3 W 3,000 mAh 9.6 Wh about 8 Wh about 0.8 W
40 W 5 W 5,000 mAh 16 Wh about 13 Wh about 1.3 W
60 W 8 W 8,000 mAh 25.6 Wh about 21 Wh about 2 W
100 W 10 W 10,000 mAh 32 Wh about 27 Wh about 2.7 W
200 W 15 W 15,000 mAh 48 Wh about 40 Wh about 4 W
100 W, large panel 20 W 15,000 mAh 48 Wh about 54 Wh about 4.8 W
200 W, large panel 25 W 20,000 mAh 64 Wh about 67 Wh about 6.4 W
300 W, large panel 30 W 25,000 mAh 80 Wh about 80 Wh about 8 W

The last column is the honest figure for all-night use. These lights can run much brighter for a short period, then dim or switch off as the battery runs down.

Which size to choose

  • Gate, porch or sign, a few hours a night: 5–10 W panel
  • Yard or shed door, dusk to midnight: 10–15 W panel
  • Larger compound or cloudy climate: 20–30 W panel, and choose the bigger panel over the bigger label

Fit the panel facing the equator, tilted so rain can wash it, and away from shade. Keep the lamp out of the rain where you can.

When to use something else

For roads and car parks, a solar flood light is too small. Use our solar street lights. If mains power is close, a mains LED flood light gives far more light for the money. Send us the area to light and the hours you need, and we will recommend a size and confirm the housing, certificates and price with the quotation.

Applications

  • Yards, gates and driveways
  • Signs and small billboards
  • Sheds, stores and farm buildings
  • Site compounds and temporary work areas
  • Places with no mains supply nearby

Frequently asked questions

Why do you list panel and battery size rather than watts?

Solar flood lights are widely sold under labels such as 100 W or 300 W, but the stored energy shows what the light can really do. A 3.2 V 10,000 mAh battery holds 32 Wh, which would run a true 100 W light for about 19 minutes. Compare panel watts and battery Wh instead.

How long does a solar flood light stay on?

It depends on the brightness setting and the previous day's sun. As a guide, a 10 W panel at 4.5 peak sun hours supplies about 27 Wh a day, enough for a true 3 W average for about 9 hours. Dimmer settings and timer modes extend this.

Can a solar flood light replace a street light?

Not on a road with a lighting class. These lights suit yards, gates, signs and sheds. For roads, use a solar street light sized for the site, such as our split solar street lights.

Can I mount the panel away from the lamp?

Yes. The panel comes on a 5 m cable, so the lamp can sit in the shade or under an eave while the panel faces the sun.
