Indoor sports need high, uniform light that does not glare into players’ eyes. We lit two basketball arenas and a sports training hall with LED fittings mounted high above the courts.
Design notes: lighting an indoor sports hall
General design guidance for this type of site, not the specification of this project.
- Light levels by level of play. EN 12193 sets typical values for basketball and volleyball of about 200 lx for training and recreational play, 500 lx for club competition and 750 lx for national and international matches.
- Glare control. Players look up at the ball, so fittings are mounted high, with deep reflectors or anti-glare optics, and positioned beside rather than directly above the main playing lines.
- Uniformity. An even field matters as much as the average; more, smaller fittings usually give a better result than a few large ones.
- Impact protection. Balls hit the fittings, so guards or impact-resistant covers (IK08 or higher) are standard.
For the method of counting fittings, see how many LED high bay lights do I need and try the high bay and warehouse lighting calculator. See our LED high bay lights.
