Furong Avenue LED Street Lighting, Xiangtan

LED street lighting along Furong Avenue, a multi-lane urban arterial road with a planted central median in Xiangtan.

Furong Avenue is one of the main arterial roads in Xiangtan. It has several lanes in each direction, a planted central median and service roads. Our LED street lights line both sides of the carriageway.

The aerial photo shows the result at night: even luminance along the full width of the road, with little light spilling into the sky or onto nearby buildings.

Design notes: lighting an urban arterial

General design guidance for this type of site, not the specification of this project.

  • Lighting class. Multi-lane urban arterials are usually designed to a high road lighting class, typically around M2–M3 (about 1.0–1.5 cd/m² average luminance), with limits on glare (threshold increment) and good longitudinal uniformity for drivers.
  • Layout. Wide carriageways with a central median are normally lit from both sides (opposite) or from twin-arm poles in the median. Service roads get their own, lower lights.
  • Pole height and spacing. 10–12 m poles spaced roughly 3–3.5 times their height apart, with the wattage chosen to meet the class at that spacing rather than the largest wattage available.
  • Optics and spill. Road optics with sharp cut-off keep light on the carriageway and out of the sky and nearby windows, which is what the aerial photo shows.

To check the spacing and wattage for a road of your own, use the pole height and spacing calculator. If you are replacing sodium lamps, the HPS to LED conversion chart gives typical equivalents, and the LED retrofit calculator estimates the savings. See our LED street lights.
