Petrol station forecourts are hazardous areas, so canopy lights must be both bright and safe. We supplied the forecourt lighting for this Sinopec station in Hexi, Xiangtan.
Design notes: lighting a fuel station forecourt
General design guidance for this type of site, not the specification of this project.
- Hazardous areas. Parts of a forecourt, mainly around dispensers, fill points and vents, are classified hazardous areas. Lights inside those zones must be certified for them; canopy lights outside the zones are often standard IP65 fittings. The site’s area classification drawing decides which applies where.
- Light level. Forecourts are usually lit brightly and evenly under the canopy so that drivers and staff can see clearly and cameras work well; the oil company’s own standard often sets the value.
- Low glare. Recessed or flush canopy fittings with diffusers avoid glare for drivers pulling in from a dark road.
- Durability. Fittings face fuel vapour, vehicle exhaust and cleaning; sealed housings and corrosion-resistant fixings last longer.
